Particulate matter emissions produced by road vehicles in the United States have fallen considerably in recent decades. Between 2005 and 2023, PM10 emissions from road vehicles fell 58 percent to 191,000 tons, while PM2.5 emissions fell by 80 percent to 63,000 tons during the same period. PM2.5 refers to atmospheric particulate matter that have a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers. They are usually composed of acids, organic chemicals, metals, and soil or dust particles, and are hazardous to human health.
