In 2021, the five-year survival rate for cancer in South Korea increased slightly to 72.1 percent. This is a marked improvement from 1995, where the survival rate was only 42.9 percent. Women had a better chance of survival that year, with a survival rate of 78.2 percent, while men's chances stood at only 66.1 percent. The five-year survival rate is defined as the likelihood that a cancer patient will not die from cancer within five years of starting treatment. A high rate indicates that cancer treatment is successful and that the medical establishment is well-suited to treating serious illnesses such as cancer.
