Latin America: venture capital deals 2020, by country
Unicorns in Latin America
Unicorns are privately-owned companies that reach a market value of over one billion U.S. dollars through private or public investments. Latin America is home to 16 unicorns, less than six percent of those located in North America or Asia-Pacific. Not surprisingly, Brazil contains nearly two thirds of the region’s unicorns, placing it among the top 10 countries worldwide.
Mercado Libre
Mercado Libre, the Argentinian online marketplace, holds the title as the undisputable unicorn leader in Latin America. In less than 10 years of operation, the company has managed to reach a market value of nearly 32 billion U.S. dollars, as well as a significant online presence in 18 Latin America and Caribbean countries.
