Total sea cargo throughput in Vietnam 2012-2022
In 2022, the total sea cargo throughput in Vietnam reached about 368.68 million metric tons. In that year, the regional sea cargo throughput was largest in southern Vietnam with 219.7 million metric tons, followed by 98.3 million metric tons in northern Vietnam, and 50.6 million metric tons in central Vietnam.
Sea cargo traffic in Vietnam
Ho Chi Minh City port was among the top 20 Asian container ports in terms of cargo capacity. Vietnamese ports handled about 154.3 million metric tons of import cargo, 136.4 million metric tons of export cargo and 69.8 million metric tons of domestic cargo in 2022. In 2018, the highest share of port operation revenue was generated from loading and unloading services as well as cargo storage. Besides sea cargo, Vietnam’s ports also handle sea passenger throughput.
Ship fleet in Vietnam
In 2021, the capacity of newly built ships amounted to approximately 372.5 thousand gross tons in Vietnam. Vietnam’s national flag ship fleet had a capacity of 11.4 million dead-weight tons in 2022. With 880 national flag vessels in that year, Vietnam ranked among the top 35 ship-owning countries in the world.
