Mexico: internet penetration 2000-2020

In 2020, approximately 72 percent of the Mexican population used the internet. This share has increased by more than 67 percentage points since the beginning of the century. Overall, the North American country stands as one of the biggest online markets worldwide.

Penetration and accessibility

By the end of 2020, it was estimated that Mexico would have close to 81 million internet users, a figure that promises to grow steadily in the coming years, reaching more than 95 million in 2025. Internet adoption in Mexican homes has become increasingly common. In 2019, more than half (56 percent) of all homes in the country had access to the Web. However, for many this service remains a luxury. According to a survey conducted among households without an internet connection, more than 50 percent of them did not have one because they lacked the economic resources to pay for it.

COVID-19 revelations

Before the coronavirus pandemic, social networks were already one of the main activities carried out by Mexicans on the Internet. During the health emergency, the importance of social media took on new relevance, generating an increase in the use of all platforms. On the one hand, these networks played a key role in entertaining confined people, while on the other, they helped to keep them informed of the development of the situation.
